Post image for Southwestern Chicken Burgers

What I love about this recipe is that it will work for you in Phase 2, Phase 3, and it makes a great family meal with just a few additions.  For a P2 POP version, simply season the meat with salt, cumin, chili powder & garlic powder. Add peppers and onion for another P2 version.  For a Phase 3-friendly version add 1/4 cup diced Pepper Jack Cheese.  And for a meal your entire family will enjoy, add 1/4 cup of frozen corn and/or black beans.

Southwestern Chicken Burgers

Serving Size: 4

  • 1-1/2 lb ground chicken breast
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp oregano
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp salt

  1. Combine all ingredients and form into four burgers.
  2. Place a large skillet over medium high heat.
  3. Add the burgers and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side.

You’re welcome, Emily!

I am really enjoying looking at your recipes. I can’t wait to try some. I thought I would make some of these chicken burgers and freeze them for a quick meal. Do you think that would work if I freeze them before cooking?

4 Toni May 5, 2012

Thanks, Kim. Absolutely they will freeze! Mine don’t make it to the freezer. I can eat the same thing 4 days in a row! You can either cook them before or after. If you cook them before you freeze, to reheat–thaw in refrigerator. Wrap in a paper towel and microwave at 70 percent for about 1 minute. Add 30 second increments until warm. The key is not to overcook.

I am excited to start my HCG diet next week and your recipes sound delicious. I was wondering what the calories are per serving for these burgers. Thank you so much for supplying such wonderful recipes.

6 Toni May 9, 2012

Someone else just asked me that on Facebook, Morgan. They are 120 cal.

7 Ashley May 12, 2012

I love your recipes and can’t wait to try them! How do you ground chicken? I tried to find some info on it but can’t! Thanks!

8 Toni May 13, 2012

Thanks, Ashley. I grind the chicken using my food processor. If you watch the video on the page at the following link and go to about minute 13 I’m demonstrating how easy it is.

@Ashley- I found ground chicken at Whole Foods.

I will be making this for dinner tonight. It looks great, I can’t wait!

11 Toni May 20, 2012

Thank you!

12 Shoshana August 2, 2012

These sound delicious! Have you tried with ground turkey? I happen to have ground turkey breast on hand which I know is not technically allowed on P2.

13 Toni August 6, 2012

In fact I have tried ground turkey, Shoshana! And no, it’s not technically allowed on P2, so I didn’t mention it–but I eat ground turkey on P2 with no problem.

14 Connie August 12, 2012

Getting ready to start P3 on Monday and I cannot wait to try these! And Pepper Jack cheese is one of my favorites! Yeah for P3!!

Thanks Toni for such wonderful recipes!

15 Toni August 12, 2012

You’re welcome. They are yummy!

16 Jill August 14, 2012

I am nearing the end of P2 and this is my favorite recipe to date. I’m making the P4 version for my family this evening. The recipe is amazing!

17 Toni August 17, 2012

Thank you, Jill!

18 Andrea September 17, 2012

Thank you for your website, this burger is sooo good. I wanted to know what side would you serve with this. I am eating a mix leaf salad with a slice of tomato and a few slices of cucumber. I am working on staying on POP.

19 Toni September 18, 2012

You’re welcome, Andrea. Absolutely cucumber or tomato. I could eat this every day!

20 Katy October 18, 2012

In the description paragraph you refer to a “P2 pop version. What does that mean?

21 Toni October 20, 2012

Katy, I’m sorry I wasn’t clear on that. POP means “perfectly on protocol,” which means only eating the things that Dr. Simeons approved in his original manuscript. Some people are real sticklers for that!

22 Shefali January 7, 2013

My husband and I are about to start P2 POP tomorrow, and were approaching it with a fair bit of trepidation … until we tried this recipe today (we were getting tomorrow’s lunch ready). We skipped the green peppers, stuck with onions, and a mix of cumin powder/chili powder/garlic/ginger/salt for seasoning. The burgers are delicious! Thanks so much … I can already tell that your site is going to become the mainstay for our P2 and P3.

23 Toni January 13, 2013

Good luck, and let me know how you are doing.

24 Audra March 23, 2013

I have just started the HCG but am using Dr. Emma’s protocol and many of the recipes that you call Rogue are allowed on her protocol. I’m so excited to start seeing the weight come off and glad I found your recipes thank you. Nothing worse than getting bored with plain baked chicken

25 Pamela March 26, 2013

This is amazing!

26 Toni March 31, 2013

Dr Emma’s huh? Never heard of it–I’ll have to check it out. You’re welcome for your kind words.

27 Macy September 16, 2013

Delish!! Thank you so much! Amazing how a great meal can perk you up on this protocol. Added cheese and corn for the rest of the family and they loved it. I sliced a tomato and add mustard on top of the burger, then wrapped the whole thing in iceburg lettuce. My bunless burger — absolutely perfect! Thanks again. :)

28 Toni September 16, 2013

You’re welcome! Happy losing!

29 Chantae October 2, 2013

I just found your blog. This is day 2 for me! With your recipes I think I can survive phase 2. I made this tonight and it was delicious!! I bought ground chicken from whole foods. It didn’t say ground chicken breast. I hope it didn’t add too many calories for me.

30 Toni October 4, 2013

You CAN survive, Chantae! How did you react to the ground chicken?
