Southwestern Chicken Burgers

What I love about this recipe is that it will work for you in Phase 2, Phase 3, and it makes a great family meal with just a few additions.  For a P2 POP version, simply season the meat with salt, cumin, chili powder & garlic powder. Add peppers and onion for another P2 version.  For a Phase 3-friendly version add 1/4 cup diced Pepper Jack Cheese.  And for a meal your entire family will enjoy, add 1/4 cup of frozen corn and/or black beans.

Southwestern Chicken Burgers

Serving Size: 4


  • 1-1/2 lb ground chicken breast
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp oregano
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp salt


  1. Combine all ingredients and form into four burgers.
  2. Place a large skillet over medium high heat.
  3. Add the burgers and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side.

    I am really enjoying looking at your recipes. I can’t wait to try some. I thought I would make some of these chicken burgers and freeze them for a quick meal. Do you think that would work if I freeze them before cooking?

    Thanks, Kim. Absolutely they will freeze! Mine don’t make it to the freezer. I can eat the same thing 4 days in a row! You can either cook them before or after. If you cook them before you freeze, to reheat–thaw in refrigerator. Wrap in a paper towel and microwave at 70 percent for about 1 minute. Add 30 second increments until warm. The key is not to overcook.

    These sound delicious! Have you tried with ground turkey? I happen to have ground turkey breast on hand which I know is not technically allowed on P2.

    In fact I have tried ground turkey, Shoshana! And no, it’s not technically allowed on P2, so I didn’t mention it–but I eat ground turkey on P2 with no problem.

    Katy, I’m sorry I wasn’t clear on that. POP means “perfectly on protocol,” which means only eating the things that Dr. Simeons approved in his original manuscript. Some people are real sticklers for that!

    My husband and I are about to start P2 POP tomorrow, and were approaching it with a fair bit of trepidation … until we tried this recipe today (we were getting tomorrow’s lunch ready). We skipped the green peppers, stuck with onions, and a mix of cumin powder/chili powder/garlic/ginger/salt for seasoning. The burgers are delicious! Thanks so much … I can already tell that your site is going to become the mainstay for our P2 and P3.

    I have just started the HCG but am using Dr. Emma’s protocol and many of the recipes that you call Rogue are allowed on her protocol. I’m so excited to start seeing the weight come off and glad I found your recipes thank you. Nothing worse than getting bored with plain baked chicken

    Delish!! Thank you so much! Amazing how a great meal can perk you up on this protocol. Added cheese and corn for the rest of the family and they loved it. I sliced a tomato and add mustard on top of the burger, then wrapped the whole thing in iceburg lettuce. My bunless burger — absolutely perfect! Thanks again. :)

    I just found your blog. This is day 2 for me! With your recipes I think I can survive phase 2. I made this tonight and it was delicious!! I bought ground chicken from whole foods. It didn’t say ground chicken breast. I hope it didn’t add too many calories for me.
